The Anti-dowry cell of the city police have stated that there is no evidence to show that actor Prashanth have demanded dowry from Grahalakshmi, his wife or treated her cruelly. This decision to close the file on dowry harassment case against him was sent to the XVII metropolitan magistrate at Saidapet on May 23. This means Grahalakshmi has 15 days to lodge her objections.
It case was started after Grahalakshmi first filed a complaint against Prashanth on September 14, 2007. Then it went to Madras high court. According to the actor Grahalkshmi have accused his father S Thiagarajan, mother Shanthi and sister T Preethi as aggressors. However all them obtained bail.
According to Grahalakshmi’s allegations they treated her as “dirt”, prevented her from making phone call to her parents, forced to eat non-vegetarian food, and not allowed to lock her bedroom.
Officers inquired Dr Rangabashyam, actor Viji, advocate Nalini Chidambaram, dance master Kala, Grahalakshmi’s first husband Narayanan Venu Prasad, and servans of Thiagarajan. Reports have quoted Grahalakshmi that “Mrs Grahalakshmi admitted that Mr Prashanth and his family did not demand any dowry and further they (Grahalakshmi’s family) have not paid any dowry to them,” and her allegations were “baseless”. To her complaint about not letting her to accompany her husband for shoots, Prashanth’s family replied that her husband did not want to expose her to the public. To the claim that she was not allowed to phone her parents, the report referred to two SIM cards used by her also proves her wrong. An independent witness has reported that her brother visited her at Thiagarajan’s house regularly. The reported also add “Her movement was not restricted and she was taken to various hospitals and temples by her in-laws,”
