Production: AVM Productions, Sun Pictures
Direction: Babu Sivan Star-casts: Vijay, Anushka, Salim Ghosh, Satyan, Sayaji Shinde, Haneefa, Mano Bala, Sri Hari and others Music: Vijay Anthony With Vijay’s previous films flunking at box office, expectations were pretty more with ‘Vettaikaran’ as it happened to be his hope Of course, ‘Vettaikaran’ is comparatively better than ‘Villu’ and ‘Kuruvi’ that turned to be a big disappointment with self-aggrandizing heroisms.
Even this film doesn’t fall short of those elements, but in adequate levels as Vijay has looks controlled in every aspect – dance, action and conveying social messages. Story: Ravi (Vijay) is an adorer of great police officer Devaraj, who’s making big news in town for evacuating violence and rowdyism. Aspiring to be a police officer, Ravi heads for Chennai to take-up his college studies. He comes across a gorgeous missy Susheela (Anushka) and falls in love at first sight. Ravi chooses a part time job of riding auto for the sake of earning his livelihood just Devaraj had lead his life. But he feels so unlucky as he isn’t able to meet Devaraj since the officer is reported to have gone out of station…. Meanwhile, he gets into clash with some of the worst roughnecks Chella and his father Vedanayagam (Salim Ghosh) and what happens next is a series of twists and turns unraveling the secret behind Devaraj’s disappearance and settling scores. Screenplay and Direction: The first half (90mins) is so racy with right mix of comedy, romance, couple of songs and more amusements. But the latter half (75mins) is slightly sluggish since there are more stunts and it reminisces us about Vijay’s previous films ‘Tirupatchi’ and ‘Bhagavathy’. Babu Sivan could’ve worked properly on second half and made it little more entertaining. Performance: Vijay excels with his dance (completely different as in ‘Ghilli’) and does comedic portions well. Haneefa and Satyan tot up to the humorous quotients. Anushka is merely used for glamour sake as she disappears after first half. Her role is so similar to Reema Sen in ‘Bhagavathy’. Salim Ghosh marks a trenchant performance. Technical Aspects: Musical score by Vijay Anthony scores 5/5 as all the songs turns out to be stunning. Even the choreography has been exquisitely done. Cinematography could’ve been better and editing is okay. Plus: First Half, Music, Vijay’s performance, Minus: Second Half, illogical screenplay, second half, not so appealing climax though creative…Verdict: Treat for Vijay fans…
