Rekka Movie Review

Having experimented with unique roles and scripts, it’s time for Vijay Sethupathi to get into commercial zone. The film ‘Rekka’ is an out and out commercial entertainer that is directed by Rathinam Siva and featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Lakshmi Menon in lead roles with an ensemble star-cast of Vedalam fame Kabir, Harish Uthaman, Satish, KS Ravikumar, Kishore and many others.

The film is about an ordinary guy Vijay Sethupathi, who is a responsible son to their parents. His father KS Ravikumar has been pampering him with affection and love and even supports in the mission of uniting the true lovers, who are threatened by situations and people to be separated. During such juncture, Vijay Sethupathi has to clash with a deadly good David (Harish Uthaman), who later after few months picks up the vengeance game. He threatens to spoil Vijay Sethupathi’s younger sister marriage if he doesn’t kidnap his so-called girlfriend (Lakshmi Menon), daughter of Madurai’s most dreaded don. Nevertheless, Vijay Sethupathi easily accomplishes the mission, where there is a surprisal element that the girl is already in love with him. Meanwhile, things get worsened, when Kabir of Vedalam fame gets into the picture of seeking revenge as Lakshmi Menon happens to be his fiancée.

Filmmaker Rathinam Siva has composed the film with massy and racy moments, where the first half proceeds with ultimate momentum, where we don’t find the lag anywhere. But sooner after the intermission, the momentum drops with the flashback sequences and couple of songs. If couple of songs were avoided, the raciness would have been retained. Nevertheless, things are back to normalcy by the last few minutes, where the climax confrontation between the hero and two baddies are something surprising and unexpected that theatres would keep applauding and whistling.

Rekka-Stills-2Musical score by D Imman on background is at best though songs are nowhere closer to the screenplay.

Vijay Sethupathi scores the best with his role and impresses us with his dialogue deliveries and mass appeal. Lakshmi Menon is disappointing with her performance, outfits and makeovers. Kabir of Vedalam fame and Harish Uthaman are extraordinary. KS Ravikumar is perfect. Kishore is commendable with his role.

Rekka is a commercial outing from Vijay Sethupathi, which will surely impress the sub-urban and village audiences without fail for this season.

Verdict: A full-fledged commercial entertainer with some slow moments.

Rating: 2.5/5
